How best to attach a winter garden to a private house
Despite the striking external resemblance, the winter garden is not a greenhouse and, especially, not a greenhouse.
The first one is intended for cultivation of various exotic plants, the second - for cultivation of fruit and vegetable crops. In order for plants to feel well, they need a special atmosphere, usually not very suitable for a long stay of a person.
Therefore, in a winter garden, a microclimate favorable for people is usually set - with a temperature of 20-22 ° C
Winter garden is a place under the sun
First you need to determine the location of your "glass room". The least comfortable is the winter garden, oriented to the south, south-west and south-east.
It will be hot at any time of the year, and in summer, the air temperature can rise to 70 ° C and above. To create in such a room more or less comfortable microclimate, additional costs will be required.
Much more pleasant is the atmosphere in the winter gardens located on the northern, north-western and north-eastern facades.
Some companies supply typical winter garden designs. In this case, the customer selects the finished solution from the range of standard models and sizes specified in the manufacturer's catalog. The limited assortment is compensated for by the high adaptability of translucent structures.
Of course, if the task is to attach a translucent structure to an existing room - a living room, bedroom or kitchen - you will have to agree to the conditions that are, and to ensure a comfortable microclimate through technical means.
The lot of professionals
Installation of the winter garden should be entrusted to a specialized company. Only professionals are able to correctly calculate the load-bearing structure, based on the area, height and slope of the roof of the translucent structure; take into account the weight of the glazing, wind and snow load for a particular region.
First, on the spot, a thorough measurement of the future building is made. Then they create a draft project, which is approved by the customer.
And only then choose the type and cross-section of the profile, prepare the drawings. Working documentation is sent to the plant, where constructive and other elements of the winter garden are made. After a while, from the ready-made set on the construction site, they mount a winter garden on a previously prepared foundation.
Features of the construction of a winter garden
Construction of the winter garden begins with the erection of the foundation. In our climate, the construction is most often raised on the basement, which rises above the ground level. Its height varies within 50-70 cm, which allows you to mount the glazing above the level of the snow cover, supporting the walls of the building from the outside. Sometimes, as a basis for the winter garden, the existing foundation for the terrace is already used - a reinforced reinforced concrete slab with a thickness of more than 200 mm.
Then mount the very translucent structure. The place of support of the structure on the plinth is leveled and insulated. When installing the frame elements, you must observe exceptional accuracy - to fit, seal and isolate all joints and junctions.

An openwork frame for a winter garden
The glass magnificence of the winter garden is based on a solid and reliable frame, assembled from profiles - plastic, aluminum or wooden. Profiles are of two types - specialized and facade.
Specialized systems are specially designed and produced for winter gardens designs, in which everything is thought through to the smallest detail. They include a huge set of elements for all occasions.
The profiles of the so-called "warm aluminum" consist of two parts connected by a structural polyamide insert, which tears the bridge of the cold and prevents the leakage of internal heat. Outside, aluminum elements are protected by special plastic pads, which increase the thermal protection properties of the structure.
Plastic profiles can only be conditionally called such. In fact, they have only a plastic shell, and inside there are guides from the same aluminum.
In addition to specialized structures in the construction of winter gardens, facade and roof profile systems, originally designed to create glass facades of high-rise buildings, are used.
They also stick to the metal - inside there is a steel or aluminum insert with thermal fracture. With the help of facade systems, you can create winter gardens with long roof slopes. However, they can not boast of special openwork and a large assortment of decorative elements.
Glazing for a winter garden
For the glazing of the facades of winter gardens, two-chamber double-glazed windows (of three layers of glass and two air layers) are mainly used. For roofs, such products are too heavy. To reduce the load on the frame and provide the required level of heat savings, for single-chamber double-glazed windows with low-emission K- or I-glass.
Thanks to special coatings, energy-saving glasses reflect thermal radiation back into the room. The second type of glass is much more efficient, but much more expensive than the first one.
Very often, sheets of cellular polycarbonate 25 mm thick are installed on the roof of the winter garden. This material is much lighter than glass (which makes it possible to increase the area of the building without additional reinforcement of the frame), and its thermal insulation ability is superior to the double-glazed double-glazed window with low-emission glass.
The disadvantages of the material include a significant linear expansion. If this property is not taken into account in calculations, then in summer the panels will warp, and fall out of the frames in winter. But the main thing is that the polycarbonate windows are opaque, which means that they will not be able to admire the stars through them.
Advice of a specialist
In addition to the usual white frames, color lamination of load-bearing structures is possible, use of decorative relief layouts imitating stained-glass windows or many small windows on the glazing. The roofs of the winter gardens, stylized as antique buildings, are decorated with christian-style cross-skates and spiers.
Security questions
For security reasons, the roof is usually completed with single-compartment double-glazed windows. The outer glass in such a double-glazed window is necessarily hardened, and the inner glass is triplex, bonded with a special film.
If the glass breaks, then the fragments will remain on the film, and not fall down on the heads of people in the room. Of course, the roof with honor withstood the typical for our climatic conditions, snow and wind load, its slope should be no less, but better - more than 30 °.

Winter garden heating: what options
The winter garden heating system needs to be considered at the design stage. Optimal solution - conventional radiators, located under the windows. They not only provide a comfortable temperature, but also prevent condensation on the glazing.
If you do not need to see the radiators at all, you can choose convector type radiators that are mounted directly to the floor, so that only the gratings that cover them are left on the surface.
Well, if the heating devices are regulated by a separate thermostat. Then in the winter garden you can maintain a temperature that differs from the temperature in other areas of the house. Warm floors are also widely used, but only as an additional source of heat. The fact is that water-based systems do not always provide the right temperature, and electrical systems use too much energy.
Ventilation in a private conservatory
In the warm season, natural ventilation of the winter garden is carried out through windows, windows and roof hatches.
For its effective operation it is necessary that the opening windows occupy approximately 20-40% of the glazing area. Through the holes located closer to the floor, air enters the room, and through the holes on the roof - out.
The windows at the height are opened and closed using a telescopic handle or automatically, in accordance with the temperature and humidity sensors. In frosty weather with closed windows, the atmosphere of the winter garden is updated due to special ventilation valves and supply and exhaust installations.
