Growing fighting roosters of different breeds - tips and recommendations for breeding
Soldier Bird - tips for growing
According to the Chinese calendar, the coming 2017 is the year of the Red Fire Rooster.
The character of the rooster, as you know, is cocky, ambitious, which is not always good for the bird's yard, but is highly regarded by the breeders of the fighting bird.
True, to participate in cockfight battles are selected special breeds, the maintenance and care of which is not at all the same as for their agricultural counterparts. The breeders told us about this fighting birds Alexander MUKHANOV from Magnitogorsk.
- Alexander, you've been practicing a fighting bird for more than 15 years. How did your hobby begin?
- As a child, I really enjoyed reading about nature, the life of animals and birds. Once my mother took me to a poultry farm, where she worked then. There I first saw how chickens are raised. The kids were about three days old, and one weak chick could not go to the feeding trough itself. I persuaded my mother to take the chicken home and was happy, taking with me in the box several multi-colored fluffy lumps.
I liked to look after and watch the chicks. Among them there were favorites whom I tried to treat with bread crumbs. The chickens grew, and the struggle for leadership began. Naturally, I was rooting for my favorite - the striped cockerel. I learned that there are fighting breeds of chickens. And since then they have become my dream. But it was possible to implement it only after graduation. I brought my first “fighters” (Dacans and Kulangs) from Nizhny Novgorod.
- Probably, at that time there was not a large selection of fighting bird breeds?
- In the early 90s of the last century, fighting birds were brought from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. In Russia, they were called Dacans. In 1996, if my memory serves me, the fighters of the breed were first brought azil from Greece, and a new history of cock fighting in Russia began. It was a bird weighing from 2,7 kg to 4 kg, very resistant, enduring in combat, inflicting accurate hard shots. Now a great variety of fighting breeds.

Vietnamese Ghana, which at the expense of the thick skin is well held by the blows, quite toughly attacked.
Turkish Hints - very smart, cunning in battle, with biting blows, able to adapt to the manner of the opponent’s battle and win against larger opponents.
Japanese shamo came to Russia recently, but have already gained immense popularity among fans of fighting breeds. This breed has a spectacular exterior, is fighting at a fast pace, as if poddavlivaet rival, not giving him the opportunity to strike.
In my household there were dacans, a fighting bird from Greece, Thailand and Turkey. Each breed is good in its own way, but I stopped on shamo, hints and the population of the fighting bird from Korea.
- Fighting qualities are inherited?
- Usually yes. Having a fighter of “good blood” is 50% success. A rooster that has won several fights is valued very dearly, they seek to get offspring from it. But speaking of successful breeding, one should not forget about chickens: they should have purebred blood and qualities of a leader.
The nature of the chicken can manifest itself in the first year, but usually it is clearly visible at two and three years of age. As a rule, chickens transmit genetics to the offspring even more than the cock. Now almost all have incubators, it is not difficult to breed and grow young in special brooders. But still the chickens that have been bred and grown up with the club are much stronger, they grow faster, absorb the full force of nature.
- At what age can promising males be identified?
- The first showdown for leadership occurs, as a rule, already in the second week of life. Then the fights subside and resume in two months. And now you need to monitor the young. Sometimes skirmishes turn into battles with serious injuries. This, of course, cannot be allowed. It is better to put the bully for a day or two into separate cells until passions subside. According to my observations, it is at the age of 2-3 months that the body of young animals is the most vulnerable.
At this time, many chickens begin to suffer from intestinal frustration or a cold, they lose their appetite, the chicks sit prone, they move little. Illnesses need to be isolated and treated with antimicrobial or antiviral drugs. Approximately in 7 months, the young growth begins to grow by leaps and bounds, the males can again arrange battles. At this age it is better to put everyone in separate cells and start training.
- How are the trainings?
- Physical training includes exercises to strengthen the muscles of the legs. The bird is thrown several times (similar to the way a rooster strikes an opponent during a fight in a jump), the “pendulum” movement is practiced, directing the rooster from his left hand to his right. Endurance is good for training fighters on a treadmill. To do this, use the wheel simulator.
The rooster is put in a drum, which rotates due to the weight of the bird, and the rooster runs like a squirrel in a wheel. In addition, they train the neck with rotational movements and up and down movements. It is also good to carry out sparring in defense (on the beak and on the muzzle), the bird fulfills strikes in conditions as close as possible to the battle. The exercise machine "pear" is popular. This is a rubber scarecrow of a rooster, it is suspended, and the bird works out the technique of blows, like a boxer on a punching bag. In general, each experienced boy soldier has his own methods. A fighting bird is usually easy to train. But it is important to carefully monitor her condition, so as not to overdo it and classes did not go to the detriment. There should be some kind of connection between the trainer and the bird; it is important to feel the state of the bird. As a rule, any abnormalities in the behavior of the rooster, its malaise or laziness, whims (yes, this also happens) are immediately noticeable. A well-trained rooster is always on the rise, the crest burns with fire, the feather glistens, the bird is like a spring on a platoon. If this is achieved, you can be 100% confident in your fighter, he will not let you down in battle!
Of course, the bird must be prepared for battle not only physically, but also by balanced nutrition. Before the preparation for the tournament, the roosters are planted separately from the hens, fed with boiled lean meat, eggs, cottage cheese, nuts and raisins, corn, and a little vegetable oil.
- Alexander, is raising a fighting bird a profitable business for you?
“I would not say that.” Bird is my hobby, outlet. In addition to fighting ones, there are Oryol chintz and Pavlovsky golden hens in my poultry yard. In general, lately breeding birds is very interesting. Exhibitions are being held that give us poultry farmers the opportunity to meet, watch and show their birds, communicate, and receive useful advice from both colleagues and specialists. Judges' evaluation of your bird at the exhibition is the result of the work.
And the result of working with a fighting bird is visible at the tournament. The ring shows what your fighters are capable of, in which direction you need to move on to improve their qualities, all this is fascinating and interesting. Fighting sports are rooted in antiquity, and my goal is to leave the descendants of beautifully athletically built birds, the contemplation of which leads to associations with gladiator fights, and not with the production of poultry farms. Now in the Urals, dozens of lovers of fighting birds. We are trying to restore the Dacan breed, lost not only in Russia, but also in our homeland - in Central Asia. Our colleagues from neighboring countries are actively helping us in this.
NOT IN SOUP, AND IN BATTLE!
The homeland of cockfights is Persia.
This kind of competition was held there in the third millennium BC. Then the fights of the roosters arrived in Greece, Rome, and later became popular in Europe. In England in the Middle Ages, this spectacular event was considered almost a national sport. Even in colleges in those days there was a special discipline, studying the methods of breeding and training of fighting cocks.
By the way, according to one version, the English word "cocktail", literally translated as "cock-beer", owes its appearance to cock-fighting. The fact is that the visitors of the duels celebrated the victory of their favorite with an alcoholic mixture. How many feathers left the tail of the winner, so many strong drinks mixed in a glass.
Cocks fights were very popular in France.

The brave bird even became the national emblem of the country. In America, fighting contests of roosters were the favorite entertainment of many presidents and politicians. Fights even took place in the White House and government buildings. In Russia, fighting cocks were in the beginning of the XVIII century. Their first owner Count Alexei Orlov ordered a bird directly from England. First, cockfights were the lot of the nobility, but then came to the masses. The competitions were held in the city squares and in taverns until, in 1860, they were banned by the decree of Tsar Alexander II.
At present, cockfighting takes place in Southeast and Central Asia. In many European countries this type of competition is prohibited.
The second wave of popularity of cockfights in Russia fell on the 90-s of the last century. Now, fights often take place both in Moscow and in other large cities. It is difficult to say how legally they are conducted. In the Russian law there is an article for cruel treatment of animals.
Nevertheless, there is no direct ban on the conduct of cockfighting. And under the current legislation that is not forbidden, it is allowed. In addition, battles take place according to sporting rules, in Russia cruelty is not allowed in the ring, the emphasis is on the strength, endurance and cunning of the bird.

DAKAN - BIRD WITH CHARACTER
Cockfighting is still popular in Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan and in the southern part of Kazakhstan. This tradition dates back to the past centuries. The bird was mainly kept by family clans, passing from generation to generation.
How they prepare fighters, what they are fed with - they all kept secret, and even more so they did not sell a good bird to anyone.
In Central Asia, fighting birds got on the Silk Road from the countries of India, China, Persia and were called Urushko huroz, which means "cocky cock."
I have been engaged in fighting breed chickens Dakan for many years.
Only the strongest, strongest and healthiest individuals who won in several battles are always selected for the tribe. Dacans are very strong, muscular, tall birds with dense plumage, long legs, almost vertically set body. The neck of the duck is long and sinewy, a small nut-like crest on the head, and the superciliary arches are strongly developed. The beak of a bird is strong, bent downwards, it is precisely by working with it that the fighter conducts the main attack on the opponent. The weight of roosters is 5-7 kg (some individuals reach 8-9 kg), chickens - 3-5 kg. Hens do not differ in high egg production, beige eggs, often have an elongated, spindle-shaped shape. According to the color of the plumage, black dacans are distinguished, red-black (closer to the wild color) and golden brown (soman).
Despite the fact that this bird is fighting, I can say that it is friendly to the person, it is easy to train, and it also remembers the owner’s voice well. Hone voice commands during training sparring. For physical training of birds, entire programs of exercises have been developed that are aimed at strengthening the muscles of the legs, wings, neck, as well as the development of endurance, breathing, stability and coordination. There are even special simulators for fighting birds - treadmills and running wheels.
The diet of the fighting bird is special, it necessarily includes meat, eggs, nuts, raisins, corn, pomegranate seeds. Such nutrition gives the necessary strength and energy.
The appearance of the fighting bird is also important. As it is known, a strong heat can provoke a molt in chickens. During this period, you have to be especially attentive to your birds. During the molting, chickens are more fearful, their relatives chase them, often they get little food. Therefore, it is best to feed the molting bird separately and add feed sulfur, fish, meat and bone meal to the diet. By the way, such additives are useful for agricultural purposes. Only you need to remember that fish-based food passes its taste to the egg.

FIGHTING COCKS - GROWING, KEEPING AND BREEDING
COCKS GLADIATORS - MAINTENANCE AND "EDUCATION"
The history of fighting in our country and what kind of spectacle it is today have already been written, and more than once. The cock that is in the best shape wins. But how to achieve it, this form, how to educate a fighter, improving the breed through him at the same time, we want to tell.
A rooster fighter must be able to strike correctly, and sharply. During the tournament, the legs of the bird move with the inner side of the metatarsus towards each other, and for the most experienced - against (with scissors), but not forward and not away from themselves. Otherwise, it will not be a blow, but a push that the opponent will not be afraid of.
Usually the rooster chooses the moment, grabs the opponent with its beak and strikes in the same place. Hunters (as lovers of cockfights were called in the old days) in this case they say “ beats with a grip”. But roosters that can strike from any position and without a stick are more valued. It is also important to be able to avoid direct and side blows with beak and legs during the whole competition. A rooster that misses fewer blows is able to strike them longer, which means that it has more chances to win. This ability to not miss a beat is innate. However, it can and should be developed through training.
I'll tell you about the fight that took place at the qualifying tournament in the Kursk region. The battle lasted over an hour and a half. Its participants Pakhan and Graf (such nicknames were given to their roosters by their owners) were well prepared, because all this time they were not just walking in a circle, but were actively fighting, constantly striking each other.
By the end of the battle, Pakhan looked as if he had not fought - he was breathing evenly and there was not a scratch on him. However, they were in no hurry to award him the victory. He stood opposite the opponent, quite ready to continue the fight, but did not attack, it was clear that he lacked the will to win. His opponent did not want to continue the fight for another reason. He missed many blows, his eyes were closed, but the rooster did not give up, did not lie down (which means "I am defeated").
For the entire duration of the battle, he never once looked around, looking for somewhere to escape, but continued to fight with his last strength. So, only such a staunch fighter can become a champion of the ring. This quality, with the strictest selection of producers, is inherited. It is impossible to educate or develop it, no matter how much time the owner spends on training.
And the fight ended in a draw: according to the rules, if the roosters, after fighting, stop and do not approach each other within five minutes, the judge declares a draw. One lacked the will to win, and the other was simply not strong enough. But strength can be trained. The ability of a rooster to bring the fight to victory is a very necessary quality and is highly appreciated by amateurs.
It is also important for a fighting cock to be able to take blows. When selecting producers for a tribe, this should also be taken into account, that is, their ability, having missed a blow, quickly restore strength and continue the fight. And besides, the bird will have to be trained by selecting exercises so that the muscles contract quickly in the opposite direction to the blow.
In order to better prepare the males for serious fights, short fights of 10-15 minutes are held for them. According to their results, the physical condition of the bird, its “move”, the ability to strike are determined, and then exercises for training are individually selected.
There are, however, general rules for the education of fighters. For example, a heavy rooster will not be able to perform in the ring. He will not fully breathe, and therefore fight with his beak. However, a fat rooster cannot be punished by starvation. It weakens the body. Better encourage him to move more. Walking in the sun will also help, but in moderation, and in the open air, since the sunlight makes the rooster fighting.
They feed such a bird with barley or oats without husks, rice, greens. If the rooster, on the contrary, is thin, it is not loaded with exercises. Rest, good feeding (meat, eggs, grains of corn and wheat, cream) are useful to him. Sunbathing is good, but in moderation and in the open air, since ultraviolet rays do not penetrate glass. Under their influence, vitamin D is produced in the body.
Having started training, on the first day, the rooster is given a laxative, such as castor oil. After this, it is useful to feed some wheat bread, soaked in water and squeezed, and then soaked in milk. The next morning, goiter is probed to make sure that the food is digested. If not, massage the goiter with your fingertips and give a peeled clove of garlic. After this, the rooster can be transferred to normal feeding.
It is better to keep the bird in cages measuring 1,5 × 1,5 × 1,5 m. The rooster must move freely.
At a height of 60-70 cm they arrange a perch. The partitions between the cells are made half of the height deaf, and half - mesh. Hearing the neighbor's voice, the rooster will constantly fly up to the perch, try to look behind the partition and so train the muscles of the legs, wings, and neck. The room must be well ventilated, but even a small draft is dangerous, it can cause a runny nose, and this is death for a fighting bird.

Recently, the chicks began to behave aggressively - pecking each other to blood. What is the reason for this?
#
The main reasons for the sawing are:
an unbalanced diet - there is not enough protein in the diet of chickens;
incorrect content - crowding, too bright lighting or low temperature in the room.
Modern crosses (hybrids) of chickens tend to gain a lot of weight in a short time. Of course, chickens need a balanced food, from which they will take all the substances necessary for the rapid build-up of muscle mass. And when one of the stages of "building material" is not enough, the chicks turn to the nearest available protein - each other's blood.
To solve the problem is simple: during the period of active growth, add meat-bone meal or slaughter waste (2-3 times a week from 1 / 8 ration) to the forage. Fresh bojnskie waste from healthy animals can be given in raw form, eliminating fatty veins, so as not to be hammered goiter. In boiled form it is safer, but less effective. Also in the chicken menu include cottage cheese with chopped nettles or a bow stylus.
