How to distinguish a stainless steel from ordinary steel + an exception to the rules
Why stainless steel magnetizes a magnet
Sometimes in my projects I use stainless steel fasteners and accessories.
To make sure that the nut or screw is made of stainless steel, I attach a magnet to them, since I was always told that stainless steel does not have magnetic properties.
However, I have several instruments made of stainless steel that are attracted by a magnet. How can I explain this?
Conventional carbon steel consists of atoms of iron and carbon.
Iron atoms are oriented the same way, like tiny magnets, and enhance the magnetic properties of steel.
Stainless steel also consists mainly of iron and carbon, but has additives such elements as chromium, nickel and molybdenum, increasing the resistance to corrosion.
The atoms of these elements affect the ability of iron atoms to orient themselves, reducing or completely suppressing their natural magnetism.
Depending on the requirements for corrosion resistance, weldability or plasticity, different grades of stainless steel with different content of additives are available.
For example, stainless steel for nuts and bolts used in seawater does not interact with the magnet, and alloys made of stainless knives or tools can attract a magnet.

This steel ruler, which does not require high resistance to corrosion, has magnetic properties that none of the stainless fasteners shown in the background have.
