TERRACE FROM THE WOOD WITH YOUR HANDS TO THE HOUSE
The terrace is called an open gallery adjoining the house.
This location gives us a unique opportunity to enjoy your stay in the open air, without giving up home comfort. If you just plan to build a country house, it makes sense to order a project with a terrace or even with several terraces surrounding the house. Then they will be erected on a single foundation with the house of the same structures and materials. If you already have a house without a terrace, it can be attached without violating existing structures.
OUR COUNCIL
The area of the terrace is determined based on how many people will use it at the same time. On the terrace width of 120 cm can comfortably accommodate two. To set the table to 6 people, you will need an area of 4 sq. M. m (2 x 2 m). To add a little space to relax, you need a playground of at least 7,5 square. m (2,5 x 2,5 m).
Cottage terrace - transitional link from a comfortable house to the garden. The best place for a summer vacation with your family or pleasant gatherings with friends is not to be found. And therefore the terrace - to be!
COZY CORNER
Whether the terrace becomes a favorite summer room, depends on its location, shape, area and connection with the interior of the house. If the terrace is made at the entrance to the house and combined with the porch, it is advisable to move the rest area slightly away from the main paths, so that the incoming ones do not interfere with the rest. It is extremely important to correctly orient the terrace to the sides of the world. The northern terraces in our climate usually look dull. It is better to attach the terrace on the south side, providing shading.
WHAT HEIGHT TO RUNNING TERRACE?
If the playground is planned as part of a garden, the height of the terrace relative to the ground should be small. However, in the winter such a construction may be buried under the snow. In our climate, terraces are usually elevated to a certain height, in accordance with the height of the basement of the house and for guarding by guarding the railings. To connect such an "elevated" terrace with a garden, you can create a multi-level construction: place an open wooden floor below the terrace and connect them with each other in steps.
The flooring will easily be shaped anyway depending on the surrounding landscape.
COZY WOOD
Most often, terraces in country houses are built of wood. At the heart of the wooden terrace is a frame structure, supported by a punctual foundation and a wooden beam attached to the wall of the house.
The foundation for wooden posts is made of concrete blocks or cast concrete (sufficient depth 50 cm). For the columns choose a moisture-resistant wood or impregnated wood. The number of supports depends on the size of the terrace and the thickness of the elements used in the construction. Posts are fixed to the foundation with a metal console, so that the wood does not come into contact with concrete. On the poles, girders are installed, and lags are fastened to them in a perpendicular direction in increments of 40-50. See the top of the log laying the planks of the cover, observing between them a gap 6-12 mm for free running off of water.
LANDSCAPED ASPECT
If you want to make a terrace at ground level, you will have to take special measures to prevent the tree from rotting. To do this, you need to carefully equip the base and make a good drainage. High posts in this case are replaced by concrete tiles, which are installed on a layer of sand and crushed stone with a thickness of 10-12 cm. The wooden logs are laid directly on the tile installed in dotted lines.
Between a tree and concrete it is necessary to lay a waterproofing, for example a roofing material. You can install a wooden flooring and over a solid concrete slab, but in this case it is necessary to make a surface with a slope of 1-2% in the direction from the house so that the water does not stagnate under the flooring. It is equally important to treat wood with antiseptic from all sides.

COVERING FOR TERRACE
Most often, the floor covering of the terrace is made of pine and spruce boards. This is the most inexpensive, but, unfortunately, short-lived option. To ensure that the coating has served as long as possible, soft and slightly resistant to mechanical stress and weathering, wood must be covered with protective impregnation. Oak wood is much more durable, but also needs protection. The most durable expensive exotic breeds - bangkirai, iroko, teak.
A reasonable compromise between price and endurance is impregnated wood, well dried and processed under pressure with special compounds. The modern solution is terraced systems made of a wood-polymer composite that looks like wooden ones. They are not affected by weather factors. True, very often they get very hot in the sun.
Note
After the rain, the outdoor terrace can be very slippery. To reduce the risk of injury, choose a material with a corrugated surface for coating. Among other things, such a surface is less prone to abrasion.
ROOF TERRACE
In the best conditions, there are terraces located in deep niches under a canopy of the upper floor, a balcony or a loggia. The roof in this case is obtained "automatically". All the rest will sooner or later have to take care of protection if not from rain, then at least from the scorching sun.
For a canopy a supporting structure consisting of racks, rafters and braces is used, on which a light, sometimes transparent roof is laid. If the roof does not completely cover the terrace, it should be done so that the water does not drain directly to the floor of the terrace.
The problem is solved by the installation of a drainage system, diverting rainwater to the site. If you do not want to build a stationary canopy, you can do with pull-out awnings or a removable awning made of special water-repellent fabric. For the winter, this canopy will have to be cleaned into the house.
TERRACE ON THE COLUMN FOUNDATION
The wooden terrace adjoining the house on the columnar foundation is the traditional and the most safe option.
Under the raised floor above the ground, a freely ventilated space is formed, which reduces the risk of rotting wood. To connect the future terrace with the house, on the wall adjacent to it, horizontally fix the first beam, on which the flooring will be based. But we must remember that a rigid connection of the terrace and the house is possible only if the structure is not new, otherwise the shrinkage of the building will lead to the destruction of the extension.
The posts are installed on a concrete concrete foundation in increments of 1,5-2 m. Support beams are fastened to wooden posts using metal corners. Then the lags are laid perpendicular to them, on which the flooring is mounted.
OUR COUNCIL
Ease of use and the cost of the terrace depend on its shape. Simple rectangular - the most economical in terms of material consumption. It is easiest not only to build such a terrace, but also to zon it with furniture. When building a terrace of complex shape, such as a semicircular or trapezoidal, the amount of waste will increase and it will be difficult to erect a roof.
1. In the unhardened concrete of the columnar foundations, metal embedded parts are placed under square beams-columns, which are later fixed with screws.
2. The horizontal beam is attached to the concrete base through a wooden spacer to prevent contact with concrete and create a gap for free draining of water.
3. The floorboards cannot be docked languidly on the support beam - the tree will rot. In this place, establish a second lag so that the joint of the floorboards falls between them.
TERRACE WITH YOUR HANDS
Today, terraces of wood-polymer composites are more and more common, but natural wood still remains a classic material for flooring.
We show how you can build a spectacular terrace with the simplest means.
1. The upper edge of the terrace should be located below the door. Subtract the thickness of the floorboards and support structure to determine the level of the sand substrate.
2. Stab in the corners of the site pegs of metal and attach the marking cord, taking into account a slight slope (away from home). Mark the height with a wax pencil.
3-4. Add 0 / 2 or 0 / 4 grains to the pad. Then, using a shovel, evenly spread the leveling layer over the surface in accordance with the height of the cord. Smooth the sand with rakes.
Terraces of natural wood have a style and charm.
The patina formed over time does not spoil them, unlike the dampness and moisture that destroys the wood. The fact is that the most common errors in the construction of terraces are associated with improper removal of rainwater. After heavy rains, the surface of the wooden flooring dries up, and the supporting structure continues to stand in a pool of water. As a result, the tree begins to rot from below. This can be avoided if, in planning a new terrace, follow the rule: the leveling layer under the terrace should have a slight slope directed from the house.
If you install a terrace with a slope to the house, in a short time before the entrance door begins to accumulate water, which will not only spoil the tree, but also penetrate into the house. Water will stagnate in the event that the floorboards are placed parallel to the wall of the house.
For a neat cutting of the floorboards, you will need an accurate tool, especially a cross-cutting saw. Inaccurate sawing catastrophically ruins the appearance of the terrace, especially in the region of the edges.
5. Use a vibrator (or vibration plate) to thoroughly compact the entire surface. You can take such a plate compacter only for one day at the rental of construction equipment.
6. After compaction of the leveling layer, check the conformity of the height to the markings and, if necessary, add sand to the places where it is insufficient.
7. Then, with a long metal strip or profile, level the surface so that a uniform area with a corresponding gradient is obtained.
8. Small irregularities can be leveled with the help of a construction level and a shovel of sand.
9. In places adjacent to the walls, it is especially difficult to work with a large metal strip. Therefore, in such areas, the base should be leveled with a trowel.
10. The next step is the lining of the entire surface of the terrace with a nonwoven material to prevent germination of weeds.
11. The last unevenness that will reveal the non-woven fabric, it is necessary to level with the help of sand.
12. After that, you can lay concrete slabs, observing between them small distances for better outflow of water.
13. When laying paving slabs, you need to check the necessary slope of the U, 5-2%. If it is not reached, slabs drown in a sandy base with a rubber hammer.
14.Trutuar plates are laid at regular intervals according to the manufacturer's instructions of the floorboards (draw a plan in advance).
15. The smoothness of the rows should be monitored using a long construction level or a metal strip.
Support structure
To make a support from paving slabs is easy and inexpensive. Plates, however, can not be laid in a continuous layer, otherwise rainwater will take too long for a complete drain, and the lags will be in the water. It is better to arrange the slabs pointwise.
Observe the bias!
To prevent moisture stagnation, the terrace should have a slight slope of about 1,5-2%. This corresponds to a height difference of 1,5-2 cm to 1 m in length. That is, if you plan a terrace length of 3 m, the height difference will be 4,5-6, see.

INSTALLATION OF FIRES ON TERRACE
Lay on the perimeter and level on the paving slabs beams. In the end there must be a whole floorboard, so you do not have to saw it along.
Make edging from the floorboards for the perimeter. Cutting and miter saw is set to 45 ° and perform a cut with a bevel.
The edging must rest on both the outer beam and the first lag of the supporting structure.
After installing the bezel, place all the logs parallel to the wall of the house on the concrete supports.
Cut the cuttings so that they fit inside the edging.
Lay all the floorboards perpendicular to the house.
Wooden spacers will provide gaps between the floorboards for free water drainage.
Drill holes for screws with a drill with a depth gauge.
BEAUTIFUL EDGE
After sawing wooden boards often have cracked or split ends. These edges must be sanded. To do this, use a belt or eccentric sanding machine with paper No. 80.
You can get by with an angle grinder-machine. The grinding wheel should be carefully guided along the edge!
Curved floorboards can be straightened using a tie strap. Secure all floorboards with screws.
Done! Cover your terrace with wood impregnation. Since it penetrates deep into only a few millimeters, the edges must first be covered with a primer to protect against blue.
HOW TO AVOID ERRORS FROM THE BEGINNING
1. Correct form the joints of the floorboards It will be incorrect to place the joints of the floorboards on the element of the supporting structure, as this will not allow the water to drain. It will be correct to install a second support element and arrange a joint between them to ensure a free flow of water.
2. Correctly screw in the screws. It is impossible to completely drown the screws in the floorboards! They are screwed flush with the surface. Holes should not be unrolled, drilling should be in accordance with the diameter of the screw.
BUILDING TERRACE WITH YOUR HANDS - PERSONAL EXPERIENCE
In the design and construction of this wonderful terrace took part all members of the family Pirnyk - Vitaly, his wife Irina and son Anton from the city of Stary Oskol Belgorod region.
FOUNDATION
And the construction of the terrace began, of course, from the foundation, dug deep in 80 cm and mounted 8 columns 40 x 40 see Why 40 x 40? Yes, because there were wall blocks from the construction of the house-from this and repelled In the slots of these blocks were specially filled I welded from the channel beakers for posts 150 x 150 and pins for fixing horizontal beams of the same section.
CARCAS
Well, then everything is like in a children's designer, only non-childish forces were needed ...
But the family is athletic (my wife and I graduated from the Institute of Physical Education, where we met, my son has the first category in basketball and not so long ago served in the ranks of the Russian army), so we managed together with my son to assemble a frame from raw seven-meter boards, although it was not easy, say .. Cuts were made on top of the posts, a beam with a section of 100 x 150 mm was laid on them, all this was fastened with studs and nuts. Well, when the frame is standing - the picture of the future terrace looms itself.
Here you can relax not only during the day, but on warm evenings!
ROOF
At the top, the rafters were fastened 150 x 50 with a step of 0,5 m, since snow loading is a serious matter, especially for such an area (35 sq. M.) A crate was fixed on the rafters, the OSB slabs were laid and the bitumen sheets of the soft roof were mounted. We did not consider the option with a metal tile, since there are bedrooms on the second floor, and we were afraid that this material would behave noisily under the windows. I think this is the right decision. Here it is necessary to mention one more correct decision: all the details of the structure were pre-coated with a double layer of Tikkuril oil impregnation with a tint - a very high-quality composition.
And more: the entire forest was treated with a machine-grinding machine with a nozzle for sandpaper. The case was completed with the roof.
Over the summer, the whole world “slowly” “issued” his wife a birthday present on September 17th. It was last year, this year - our terrace has found its full appearance: hanged curtains, built a sofa swing. In the future we plan to purchase a video projector and watch films here.
FLOOR INSTALLATION
On the horizontal beams, the floor lags were fixed with a pitch of 40 cm, on them the floorboards were mounted from a super-modern material - wood-polymer composite (DPC). Nothing complicated. But with steps it was necessary to tinker: to cut out 22 preparations, to cover them with bituminous mastic, to fill under each mini-foundation. In this we were well helped by the wife's brother Sergei, who came on vacation with his parents. At the same stage in the risers, I mounted LED lights, designed specifically for the steps. The luminaires also mounted on the ceiling of the terrace, the ceiling was lined with PVC panels, also provided for a pair of sockets and a switch on poles at the wall. That's basically it.

ALTERNATING AND REPAIR OF THE OLD TERRACE
Note that this type of terrace, high above the ground level and fenced, but not glazed, are often called verandas. Both names are correct in this case. Well, let's see how our terrace, or veranda, changed as a result of a small cosmetic alteration.
The floor and steps of the terrace were painted gray, and then the space was divided into zones. A bench was set at the door, which creates a central focus, since it is the first thing that catches your eye when you approach the house. On both sides of the bench, mats were laid that "outline" the relaxation areas. Both the hanging swing on the left and the comfortable armchairs on the right offer views of the endless summer hydrangeas surrounding the porch.
And, at last, they placed the small things made by themselves. For registration used wood, metal, concrete, string.
CORNER WITH QUALITY
Suspended swings - the main element of the recreation area, located on the left of the terrace. And the decorations used here make this place more cozy.
The combination of a wide bamboo roller blind and a light, fluttering curtain creates a feeling of coziness and "softens" the sharp corners. A variety of patterns on pillows and a unique texture of weatherproof fabrics also add to this corner of comfort.
Wicker baskets on the wall are an easy way to beat the color of the fiber mat and rope swing mounts.
Plants help create a relaxed mood. Along the terrace a number of summer hydrangeas are planted, and on the steps there are several beautiful flower pots that visually unite the porch with the surrounding garden.
Wooden swings are suspended not on a metal chain, but on a massive braided rope. A natural fibrous mat on the floor repeats its texture and color.
You can create an individual style by combining familiar things with new "treasures". A vintage chest is used as a side table, suitable for storing tools for the garden and for placing any decorative pieces.
A large mirror reflects light and adds depth to the space, visually increasing the volume of a small room. This mirror in a frame of wide boards complements the careless, rustic, style of the house.
GUEST ZONE
On the opposite end of the terrace, on the right, there is a living room in the open air. It's like inviting guests to sit and talk. Wicker chairs with soft pillow seats create a feeling of relaxation and comfort. A negligently thrown soft blanket does not freeze even on a cool evening.
The place was found for a homemade coffee table on large roller wheels, which can be easily moved from place to place. A special mood in the interior of the terrace creates bright blue hydrangeas in a metal vase. On the ceiling there is a suspended lampshade, also handmade.
LAMP
A simple lampshade made of unusual material gives the recreation area an unusual appearance. To make similar it is possible, using a simple plastic plafond and decorative plaster with imitation of concrete. First, the outside and inside plafond should be sanded with sandpaper to make its surface slightly rough. Then it is necessary to primed the plafond from the outside and inside the soil with quartz crumb.
Primer should be applied with a brush, chaotic movements. When the primer dries, you can start applying decorative plaster to concrete for outdoor work. Such a plaster will simulate a concrete surface with its inherent porosity, uneven rough texture, reflections and color overflows.
The first layer of plaster is applied with a brush. And then with a spatula we impose a thicker layer of plaster and smooth, giving the desired texture of concrete, with the influx. Then it remains to insert the bulb in the dried shade and hang it over the rest area.
IN THE CENTER OF TERRACE
The place next to the front door just behind the steps was perfect for an original bench, two pots and a wall panel with a sconce. Both the panel and the bench are made by themselves.
The seat of the bench can be made from old boards. In our case, it is made from an old wooden window screen from the sun and framed by a frame of old boards.
The bench stands on two thick supports, and this makes it very solid. Supports for the bench can be made from ready-made polystyrene-concrete or expanded-clay concrete blocks. To give the supports a more aesthetic appearance, they need to be plastered.
WE MAKE CARTOON
The central zone of the terrace is decorated with two pots of concrete. The filling form for them was a simple bowl of stainless steel.
- Cut the wooden plank along the length of the diameter of the stainless steel bowl, and the other on the diameter of the smaller bowl. Attached a smaller bar, in the center, to a larger bar. Wipe the inside of the metal bowl and the outside of the plastic container with vegetable oil.
2. Prepare the mixture: add the sieved sand to the cement in the proportion of 1: 3 or 1: 5. Pour the water until the mass has acquired the consistency of thick sour cream. To make the container similar to stone, mix peat (2-3 parts of peat on 1 part of sand and 1 part of cement).
3. In a bowl of stainless steel, pour the mixture sufficiently so that when a smaller plastic bowl is placed inside the concrete mixture would rise to the brim.
4.Place wooden planks on top of both bowls - a smaller plank inside a small bowl. Lay a brick on top so that the plastic bowl does not rise. When the mixture has dried, flip and tap.
YOU WILL NEED
- cement brands M400 or M500
- large bowl of stainless steel
- plastic bowl slightly smaller
- two wooden slats
WALL PANEL
A wall panel with a backlight in a wide frame is easy to make for one weekend. Such a composition will revive and diversify the terrace and provide soft evening lighting.
- galvanized iron 20 x 20 cm - 20 sheets
- Toilet cleanser with hydrochloric acid
- 0,65 cm metal screws - 20 pcs.
- plywood 1,25 cm for external work 76 x 95 cm
- spray-polyurethane
Roofing iron.
To create a rust effect on galvanized sheets, soak a few cotton rags with toilet liquid, question them, put them on sheets and leave for a couple of hours. Repeat 3-4 times to break the zinc coating. Rinse the sheets, allow to dry. Spray the polyurethane.
Base.
Place the metal sheets on the plywood rectangle so that the edges of the sheets overlap by about 1-1,5, see Self-tapping, attach the sheets to the plywood as evenly as possible. Near the top edge, drill a hole for the lamp wiring.
Frame.
Measure and cut corners on slats 10 cm wide and 76 cm long and 95 cm. Spray polyurethane on the boards for protection. Nail boards to the plywood with parquet nails.
Lamp.
Route the wiring from the lamp through the hole in the plywood. Fasten, hang on the wall.
TERRACY TREESURE
So, the terrace is built, the furniture is arranged, now it's time to decorate it with plants. This simple trick will help to create the most that neither is summer mood!
The main option for placing plants on a terrace or next to it is containers and vases of various shapes, types and sizes.
Flower containers are good in that they can plant almost all types of ornamental plants, even capricious.
But we must remember that it is better to drop flowers into containers rather than just flowers, but real floral arrangements carefully selected taking into account the architecture of plants, the shape and color of the leaves, the length, the duration of the decorative effect.
Note
In the autumn, containers specially designed for pots are dwarf varieties of chrysanthemum (they are used as summer - in winter they hibernate very badly).
CHOICE OF COLORS
More often in containers grow annuals and potted plants, less often perennials. For an open, well lit by the sun, the site is well suited for verbena Canadian and hard, marigold, portalak, decorative beans and cineraria. For shady corners, it is better to choose balsam, tobacco fragrant, Vitroka violet, Nemesis, Houston aureatum. From perennials - small-sized hosts, bahdan, bell of Carpathian.
Dwarf tuberous dahlias, begonias look great in containers, montbrecia is absolutely charming, and if you want something unusual, plant low small-flowered gladioli - they look fantastic during flowering, but, unfortunately, they quickly lose their decorative effect. It is better to combine them with summer calendula, cosmea or low varieties of snapdragons.
HOLDERS FOR POTTLES
There is another way to decorate the terrace with flowers - to install holders for flower pots on the fence of the terrace. On one holder, you can place both / $ one or several pots - it depends on the shape and size. On sale there is also a special-purpose planter for attaching to the fence - holders are not needed for them. This technique is good if you want to place a lot of plants, but you do not want to clutter up the terrace.
SUSPENSION CONTAINERS ON TERRACE
Also on the open terrace are also suspended containers. They can be successfully placed on a railing, a wall, a shed, a screened screen. For hanging baskets it is better to use ampel plants, which, hanging from them, create above the head a cascade of green foliage and flowers. Such plants include begonia, petunia, lobelia, compact varieties of nasturtium, sweet peas, fuchsia, etc.
MOBILE GARDEN
On the terrace you can create a special container garden and grow in it, for example, spicy plants - sage, lavender and hyssop (for the winter they will have to be dug together with pots in the garden), pelargonium, myrtle and rosemary (in winter do not forget to bring them into the room) cats, mint, various kinds of geraniums (they can be left in containers, but only if they are of large diameter). Suitable and different types of salad, rucola, parsley, basil. There are varieties and hybrids of stunted and dwarf tomatoes ("Balcony Wonder", "Bonsai", "Four Years"), eggplants ("F1 Medallion", "Ophelia F1", "Patio Blue", "Patio Trio", " F1 ") and peppers (Istrinka, Golden Baby F1, Sweet F1), which can be grown in containers. Good and ampel varieties of tomatoes for baskets ("Cherry Falls F1", "Apricot Dreams F1"). You can decorate the terrace and berries, for example, a pretty compact strawberry.
GREEN WALLS
On the fences of the terrace or on the tapestries set next to, you can let climbing plants. They will hide the terrace from prying eyes, shadow it and create a summer mood. If a dense shadow is necessary, preference is given to the girlish grapes, ivy, hops, or broad-leaved kirkason. To decorate the terrace plant roses, clematis, kamplis, wisteria. To enjoy pleasant aromas on the terrace, put fragrant varieties of whip-blown roses or honeysuckle honeysuckle. It is important to consider and illumination. So, for the sunny side, there are kampis, wisteria, whip-flock of roses, grapes of table and wine varieties.
For shade - ivy, petiole hydrangea, schizophragm. For partial shade - lemongrass, girl's grape, Highlander Aubert, wood pliers, actinidia, aconitolis ampelopsis.
The mixborder will decorate the area in front of the terrace. You can plant in it not only flowers, but also shrubs (beautifully flowering and decorative leaves), conifers. Plants in such a flower garden have a ladder. The far row is formed by tall plants, the middle one is low, and the near one is undersized or creeping. So that the mixborder does not look monotonous, decorate it with plants that are different in appearance, emphasize bright colors with delicate shades, create a smooth transition between tall and low plants. And scatter different yearbooks throughout the flower garden - their long and plentiful flowering will add colors to the composition.
Tapestry for climbing plants will create a green corner, even on a small terrace (IKEA)
Note
At the entrance to the terrace, you can plant neat trees or shrubs, for example, slender thai, junipers, spiraea, vesicles
WONDERFUL WELFARE
If, sitting on the terrace, you want to enjoy the fragrance of flowers, create a fragrant flower garden nearby. On the edge of such a flower garden, plant the lowest fragrant plant, for example, sea alissum (alyssum). Slightly further from the edge sow another fragrant summer - fragrant, inconspicuous, but possessing a delicate delicate aroma. In such a flower garden, of course, there should be a rose. The company is diversified by peonies, the most fragrant of them are old terry varieties. The aromatic collection will be complemented by large-rhizome geranium, fragrant tobacco, Fassen's catnip, panicled phlox.
OPEN TERRACE OWN HANDS
FOR ALL THE SUMMER OF THE YEARS OFTEN, WE ARE GOING TO COLLECT THE FAMILY, YES AND FRIENDS FOR A WELCOME GUEST. TO REST WAS COMFORTABLE AND EVERYTHING ENOUGH PLACES, ATTACHED OPEN TERRACE TO THE HOUSE.
Prepared a plan (see Fig. 1). I determined the size of the extension - I got 5 × 3 m.
Using pegs and a rope, I marked the site. I dug a trench along the perimeter, poured a 10 cm thick cement mortar into it. When it hardened, laid a foundation 60 × 40 cm in size on it from concrete blocks (height, width). A layer of roofing material was put on the blocks for waterproofing (Fig. 2), and along the blocks it was flooded with a blind area.
From a wooden beam with a section of 100 × 100 mm, I mounted on the foundation a skeleton of a terrace with a gable roof with a slope of about 8 degrees. On it, with a pitch of 50 cm, he fixed the crate from the board on top, laid ondulin first on it (photo 1), and then the metal tile.
The planed board covered the floor. On the beams along the long side of the frame parallel to the wall of the house, secured the fence with a height of 80 cm, and made steps on the sides of the terrace (photo 2)
All wooden elements of the new structure were coated with antiseptic in three layers and painted white with waterproof paint. On the same day, I invited our neighbors to visit and together we marked the end of construction with a friendly tea party in the open air.

SUNNY TERRACE OWN HANDS - FROM POLYCARBONATE
I have long dreamed of building a new spacious terrace near the house.
At the family council, they decided to make it big so that it reliably protected from precipitation both in summer and in winter and led up to the gate.
Now we don’t have to clean the path to the house in the winter, even if the snow from the roof is an avalanche.
And during the rain it is very convenient - you immediately hide under the roof.
In the Yaroslavl region there are very few sunny days. Therefore, it was decided to make the roof transparent, from yellow polycarbonate. I saw a neighbor's canopy of the same color - under it, even in bad weather, it is bright and sunny.
Having reviewed many projects on the Internet, I settled on a scheme with a curved roof - and I was not mistaken. Further operation showed that such a curved profile looks good, more durable, easier to withstand the wind load and significantly reduces the amount of rainfall entering the terrace.
TERRACE FOUNDATION
The construction of the terrace began with the foundation. At first I thought of putting it on piles, but for such an easy construction, a capital foundation is not needed. Moreover, in our area it is expensive and it is not always done efficiently. He stopped on the foundation of car tires from a passenger car. The previous terrace also stood on this, and for 15 years it did not warp. But in our area, a high level of groundwater and winter heaving of the soil can be very significant.
When making a new foundation, they usually remove the topsoil to a depth of 30 cm, fill it with sand, lay car tires and concrete or clog the soil. I slightly changed this scheme. I buried 4 tires in each pit, laid geotextiles down and hammered everything tightly with sand. The top tire, which protruded above the ground by 5-10 cm, was concreted. During operation, such a foundation has proved to be the best. Tires with sand play the role of a kind of damper, and the veranda practically does not “walk”. For a terrace of 3 × 11,5 m in size, 10 such supports had to be built: 5 against the wall of the house and the same number along the edge of the veranda. Just the number of racks holding the roof.
FRAME OF VERANDA
The base of the terrace is welded from a metal profile pipe 60x60x3 mm in the form of a rectangle with jumpers for each rack. Next, I installed 5 vertical posts from a profile pipe of the same size. The top of the racks connected among themselves by the same profile pipe. The distance between the posts is 245 mm, the height is 215 mm. The longitudinal crate is made of a bent along the flat side of a 3-meter profile pipe 40x20x2 mm. If significant snow load is expected in your region, you can use a profile pipe 50x25x3 mm or bend the pipe along the end part. In this case, the roof will be more durable.
The longitudinal pipes were welded in increments of 63 mm. Cross crate made of the same pipe. Only the step here is changeable. If you look from home, then the distance between the pipes is 90-80-110 mm. The last step is greater, because here the ramp and the load, say snow, are minimal.
The roof lathing of the terrace has 2 points of support on the transverse beam of the racks on one side. I had to change the fixing of the crate to the house a little. Since it was impossible to firmly attach it to the eaves of the roof of the house, I drilled holes in the eaves and attached longitudinal profile pipes directly to the top log of the house. The fasteners were made floating - a L-shaped screw is screwed through the hole in the profile pipe, not tight, with a gap of 10 mm, which makes the structure moveable when the soil is heaving.
The floor on the terrace is two-level. The upper platform is designed to exit directly from the door of the house, and the lower one is arranged at a height of 10-15 cm from the ground level.
FLOORS
The floor of the upper platform and steps leading to the lower platform are made of trimmed planed 3-meter board 150 × 35 mm. I covered it with terraced varnish in 2 layers.
The floor of the lower part is a more complex structure. Corners are welded to the longitudinal parts of the iron frame, and 50 × 40 mm wooden blocks are embedded in them. Edged 3-meter boards 150 × 25 mm with a pitch of 100 mm are attached to them with self-tapping screws. On the crate, 20 mm thick DSP boards are laid and fixed. And they already have - floor ceramic tiles of standard size 30 × 30 cm. I laid it on the mounting foam, sealing the joints with waterproofing. For 2 years, there were no problems with the tiles. I believe that the foam made the coating durable and ductile, which helped to avoid delamination of the tiles from the DSP in conditions of tough operation with a large temperature difference. (Polyurethane - the basis of polyurethane foam - collapses over time. It is safer to use special mastics for ceramic tiles and ceramics. In consistency, they look like liquid nails, only the substance is more fluid. Tiles should not be peeled off from a good mastic. And a minimum layer is required. -. )
FIXING POLYCARBONATE
For the roof, I took a dense polycarbonate with a thickness of 8 mm. Fastened it without using the fasteners recommended by the manufacturer. Why? I am deeply convinced that touching (rubbing) polycarbonate surfaces emit a very unpleasant crackle when the ambient temperature changes. My polycarbonate is overlapped and is very tightly clamped between two pipes with bolts. So the wind won't blow the roof away. The upper edge of the polycarbonate is wound under the roof of the house, and the lower one is fixed with a minimum number of ordinary roofing screws. This is convenient: in winter they do not prevent snow from falling off the roof of the terrace.
According to many years of experience of neighbors, the operation of canopies with such a fastener, regardless of the thickness of the polycarbonate, does not cause problems. And of course, the aesthetic appearance plays a role: the green longitudinal pipes at the junctions of the polycarbonate harmonize with the roof of the house and give the structure a more voluminous appearance.
IMPORTANT. Polycarbonate can be fixed in this way only in hot weather, when it has maximum expansion. If you mount it at a low ambient temperature, when heated, the sheets are deformed.
I did not seal the edges of the polycarbonate, otherwise the edge would fall off when the snow melted, and the adhesive tape frayed over time, spoiling the appearance of the building. I saw this more than once on other roofs. Yes, during the operation of the veranda, a small amount of dust accumulated along the edge of the honeycomb, but so far it does not spoil the appearance. I look forward to 7-8 years of operation of the coating, followed by replacement.
The finished terrace was decorated with wrought iron elements. Welded to the top of the racks, they not only further strengthen the frame, but also serve as convenient hooks for flower pots. Finishing touch - white plastic gutters. They protect the terrace from rain spray and additionally decorate it.
For two years now, the new terrace has been our favorite vacation spot. In summer, this is a full-fledged additional room, and in winter - a roof, which protects the exit to the street from snow.
Yes, in hot weather you cannot sit on such a terrace in the sunshine - the sun is baking. But in our region there are very few hot days, and most of the time the terrace is actively used. And here various flowers feel great.
What disadvantages were identified during the operation of the new terrace? It made sense to cover the upper part of the veranda with tiles. The boards darkened over two years, they have to be regularly covered with terrace oil, but with a dark tint. So I plan to lay the tiles here, too. Yes, in winter the tile glides. But we are laying the carpet - and there are no problems.

Underwater fireplace decking
We decided to improve the terrace, and covered the floor with a terrace board. The flat floor with elegant longitudinal grooves looked impressive, but ... not for long. Debris accumulated in the grooves intended for water drainage. Sand, dust, small twigs and leaves, grass, in a word, everything that was on our feet ended up in the terrace board. And sweeping it all out with a broom was unrealistic, I had to clean it with a high pressure washer.
Apparently, we placed the boards incorrectly (without a slope), water accumulated in the grooves and slowly absorbed into the wood. It darkened, and it was impossible to grind and cover with any kind of impregnation because of the same decorative relief. The protruding parts were chipped off, which was also impossible to restore. In addition, the boards began to warp. In a word, we got disappointed in the terrace board very quickly and after a couple of years of operation, we completely replaced the floor on the terrace. This time they installed an AB grade deck board. They were soaked in oil twice from moisture. Quite another matter! The even surface of the floor can be sanded or painted, cleaning does not present any difficulties. And rainwater in its mass simply flows from the boards, the oil does not allow it to be absorbed into the wood. And single drops, if desired, can be either wiped with a rag, or blown off with a vacuum cleaner, putting it on blowing.

For me, a suburban area is a place where you can relax your soul, fully enjoy the beauties of nature, breathe plenty of fresh air. Therefore, when our family had a question about building a country house, I insisted on the project of a house with a terrace facing the garden. As a result, the terrace was erected on a single foundation with the house, and they have a common roof.
WPC boards were laid on the terrace floor. When the construction was over, I installed a corner sofa made of artificial rattan and several armchairs in the "living room in the fresh air". Now in the warm season in the mornings we drink coffee here, admiring nature. Here, on the terrace, we do sports: I do yoga, and my husband and son do dumbbells.

At our beloved dacha, the third generation of the family is working and resting. The longest building on our site is a terrace for summer gatherings.
Planned and started its construction in 2007 year after the construction of the dacha, when the construction remained a wooden beam. The beam dug into the ground, building the base of the octagonal podium with a diameter of 4,5 meters.
In autumn, a young seedling of white willow was planted in the center of the podium. And on the perimeter of the podium, flower beds were organized.
Later, lags were laid around the perimeter and inside every 0,5 m they were fixed with corners, painting over with the remnants of different impregnations. Then more painstaking work began - the floorboards had to be planed with an electric planer, cleaned with a grinder and soaked in rosewood twice in color. Along the entire perimeter of the terrace, except for the entrance, wide benches were installed on the originally dug bars. To the willow, electricity was laid under the floor. 3 floodlights were attached to the poles around the willow — two on one column, one illuminates the crown, the second - a flower bed under the willow, the third floodlight is attached so that you can direct the light in the evening as you wish ...
