Sweet cherry inoculation - step by step photos and description
TREATING CHERRIES: STEPS GRINDING
Not every fruit tree is capable of settling down well in the middle lane. These are capricious cherries. But it can also be "tamed" if it is planted on a cherry, for example, by copulating.
Everything is ready to work:
cherry seedlings, cherries of different varieties, pruner, vaccination tape, labels and marker, as well as a vaccination knife.
In the photo above you can see the successful result of vaccination: leaves appeared from the buds on the graft.
1. To start with the cherry trees that you want to propagate, cut a few last year's shoots - they will serve as scions.
2. The best cherry rootstocks are the following: Magaleb cherry (tall), stock LC-52 (medium grown) and Gizella (short), SL 64 (short), and VSL-2 (dwarf). The latter are most preferable, since the height of the tree on such a stock in the future will be about 3-4 m, so that it will fit perfectly into even a small garden. Stocks can be purchased at garden centers or nurseries of fruit trees. So, let's prepare the stock for “work”: in order to increase the growth of new roots, shorten all existing ones by about half their length.
3. Next, cut the stem to a length of approximately 15-20, see

4. Graft in diameter must coincide with the stock, so that when connecting the layers of tissue coincide. 5 Next, do the cuts. It is very important that they are smooth and even. Therefore, you need to use only a sharply sharpened ordinary knife, and ideally a special knife for grafting. The tool before use does not hurt to sanitize. So, attach the blade almost parallel to the shoot and cut it in one motion, directing the force from the shoulder. If you failed to make the manipulation on the first attempt, do not be discouraged: this happens quite often. However, in order not to spoil the material, it is desirable to practice a little on the eve of the inoculation, for example, on the shoots of willow or hazel.
5. If the cut on the scion or stock did not turn out as it should, retreat a little and make a new one.
7. This is the correct cut. In length (approximately 4-5 cm), they should be the same. Do not touch them with your fingers!
8. Next, connect the graft with the rootstock so that in a pair they form a solid escape. If the graft and stock differ somewhat in thickness, then the cuts must coincide at least on one side. This is important because along the edge there is a layer of the so-called cambium, which ensures the intergrowth of two parts. Contributes to this process and the kidney, which is located on the scion from the opposite side of the cut.
9. Now, from the bottom up, tie the place well with a special elastic tape. The graft itself must have 3-5 buds, which in our case corresponds to the length of the shoot about 10, see
10. Ready grafted seedlings must be marked with tags attached to the graft variety, if known.
11. Plant wards need to be in the greenhouse under the film (it should be built in advance to warm the soil), where future trees will be protected from cold and strong wind. You can take shelter when the weather is warm.
12. In the summer it will become clear which vaccination was successful - the buds on the scion will wake up and shoot. After that, you can remove the vaccination tape if it itself has not fallen off before (this often happens). In the photo, blue granules are not a fertilizer, but a remedy for slugs, since these pests are happy to regale themselves with young leaves and shoots of trees.
For the plot, it is enough to leave a copy of each variety, give the other cherries to friends or neighbors.
