HOW TO MAKE A DECORATIVE SCREEN FOR EXTRACT
Bathrooms, toilets and kitchens have air vents covered with plastic gratings. This is an excellent universal solution, but the bars look not very presentable.
When I did repairs in the bathroom and toilet, I paid attention to it. I wanted all the walls in the room to look the same and nothing alien wouldn’t catch the eye. After the repair, there was an unused ceramic tile, with which I decided to close the vent.
In order for the screen to hide the edges of the vent. the tile must be larger than the size of this hole on 1.5-2 cm on each side.
To cut off the excess ceramic tiles, I used an angle grinder (grinder) with a diamond disc installed. With a good disc and hard hand, the cut is smooth, with a minimum number of chips. The edges of the cut, if necessary, can be sanded with emery paper, fixed on a flat surface? for example on a wooden bar. As a result, we get perfectly smooth tile edges without chips and other defects.
The drill has a cylindrical tip of high-strength hardened metal and easily passes the material. It is necessary to drill with light pressure and medium flow. To prevent the drill from slipping on the tile surface, it is necessary to mark the place of the drilling, make a chip with a drill, or glue the adhesive tape.
After the protective screen is ready, you need to mark two holes on the screen and the wall. The easiest way to drill a hole in a tile is with a special drill for ceramics or glass.
I fasten the screen to the wall with metal threaded consoles. They can be made from studs or long bolts. I prefer to use the M8 bolt with a length of 80 mm, pre-cutting the head with a grinder. If a stud is used, it is additionally necessary to chamfer at the point of a cut on the thread in order to tighten the locking nut.
To fix the studs in the wall, you must drill holes with exactly the same center distance as in the screen.
The accuracy of the center distance should be minimal - this will subsequently facilitate the installation of the screen.
Ceramic tiles need to be drilled with the same drill as the screen, but when the ceramic layer is passed, you need to replace the drill with a drill with a diameter of 6 mm and continue drilling, but with a blow. The drill for ceramics is not intended for drilling concrete or brick and may break off. The depth of the hole must be done TO - 50 mm - this will ensure reliable fastening studs. Additionally, the pin can be planted in the hole (pre-blowing it) on glue or epoxy.
After the glue has hardened, the nuts with a rover should be screwed onto the studs to increase the bearing area and adjust the distance from the screen to the wall.
The screen must be installed so that the distance between the wall and the screen is sufficient for the free passage of air (1,5-2 cm), and the screen itself covers the ventilation hole. If you need access to the ventilation duct, it is easy to unscrew and remove the panel.
For fixing the screen, you can use a decorative nut of any shape and texture. Since there are many chrome-plated parts in sanitary rooms, I took a stainless steel hex nut, but any other cap can be used.
When using power tools, be sure to use personal protective equipment and follow safety precautions!
