When a new car appeared in our family - a seven-seater LADA Largus with roof rails, I thought about finalizing the roof rack, as was done on my old Izh-Oda.
For the carriage of goods on cars with railings usually buy more crossbar. But they are expensive, and I planned to put five of them to distribute the load on the roof. I did not know how solid the finished bars were, and decided to make them myself.
DIMENSIONS
Before buying blanks, it was necessary to determine the length of the crossbars. The distance between the outer surfaces of the railings measured by the tape measure is -92, see. Suitable aluminum alloy profiles were sold in stores of length 1 or 2 m. If you use a profile of length 1 m, then its length is sufficient. But finished branded crossbar significantly longer. You can buy a profile length of 2 m and cut off the excess, but then there will be too much waste. In addition, the crossbar, sticking too far to the side, I do not like purely visual

TRAINING
I bought five meter profiles with a 20 x 50 mm section with 2 mm wall thickness and 1 m corner 50 x 50 mm 2 mm thick, from which a thin disc of the Bulgarian filed 20 x 50 mm corners. You also need galvanized hardware: 50 50 x 40 screws, M5 nuts, 30 5 mm spring and simple washers, 0 5 xNUMX x bolts, M10 wrenches and reinforced 8 70 nuts, 8 xNUMX nuts, and 0 X-mm reinforced washers and 8 8 nuts and MHNNX reinforced washers Then I had to buy eight sets of fasteners for XNUMX mm.
It was not possible to measure the distance between the rails on the car with an accuracy of a fraction of a millimeter, so I decided to assemble the crossbars in place. After making the crossbeams, the dimensions are already more defined, which will allow to repeat the design according to the drawing.
ASSEMBLY
He began by carefully putting symmetrically the crossbar on rails on rubber gaskets, for which he took pieces from the old bicycle tire in two layers with a pipe. This is very convenient, since the thickness of the gasket can be increased by placing pieces of rubber of the desired thickness inside the tire segment. A corner was fixed on one end of the crossbar, having drilled the necessary holes, and clamped it with screws. Similarly, I fixed the corner on the other end of the crossbar, and then the inner corners. So that after trying on the corner did not move out, pressed it with a clamp.
At the ends of the crossbars, the speakers of the corners were sawed. All blanks evenly spread on the length of the rails. At the middle crossbar, cut a piece from the corners to make its position as close as possible to the middle. The first secured the second and third crossbar, drilling holes 0 e mm in the corners and pulling them with screws and wing nut.
Rails are not straight, so I had to pick up gaskets in thickness. To do this, two already installed crossbar sieged down so that there was no gap left, then installed the first, fourth and fifth crossbar, but has not drilled holes in the corners yet. Then he attached to them a long straight profile as a ruler and fixed it with clamps on the second and third crossbars. Having measured the resulting gaps, I picked up paddings from the rubber pieces, after which it became clear where to drill the holes 0 9 mm. The first and fifth crossbars had to be lowered below.
Then practice has shown that additional gaskets have become good shock absorbers when transporting heavy cargo.
CARGO TRANSPORTATION
During operation, problems began to be identified. So, boards 6 m long begin to swing, creating dynamic loads. To avoid this, an oscillation limiter is needed - this is usually a rope tied to the body. Then I had to smash my head. My old “Izha” had a shorter body, and the trunk was located closer to the middle, so the boards went beyond the front of the body and I fastened the rope to the bumper. But Largus is not so. In the end, he made rope loops that hooked on the hinges of the hood.
The crossbar has no limiters at the ends, you have to carefully fasten the load. For centering on the length used a tape measure. It is necessary not only to tie the boards to the trunk, but also to tie the front and rear ends so that they do not crawl. We must not forget to mark the protruding lengthy goods with red flags. A special sign in the form of a striped rectangle is required for this, but there is no such sign in auto shops, so I use flags.
There was nothing to tie to the rear ends of the boards to reduce the buildup, but this was offset by the soft Largus suspension. In any case, the speed on a good road is not higher than 40 km / h, and on bumps it is much less.
At one time I drove eight boards 50 x 150 6 m long. This is a little more than 180 kg. Loaded and unloaded with an assistant. With such a load, you should not ride on highways - only on local roads from the nearest warehouse. But I brought the boards for the frame of the house with the attic just like that.
INCREASED TRUNK
Depressed by the lack of side stops. Since the farm had profiles of length 2 m, I decided to use them for this, at the same time extending the trunk itself. I attached the profiles with clamps to the crossbeams and drilled the vertical holes for assembly directly into the assembly. I screwed the profiles to the front and rear ends of the profiles with a length of 1 m.
In the autumn I unscrew all the lambs, take off the details of the trunk and leave in the garage until spring. In order not to be confused, I wrote the number of crossbars in pencil. If you plan to transport a light long cargo, you can put a pair of crossbars in the trunk. I collect everything in the spring. It turned out that part of the crossbar is set tight. This is due to the fact that the assembly was in place. Once I put all the removed crossbars next to me and specified the dimensions. I was surprised to find that the rails are strictly parallel. It was possible to take the size and make a sketch.
