STRUGGLE AGAINST THE WHEATWOOD - REVIEWS OF READERS AND AGRONOM ADVICE
These tiny, delicate, moth-like insects are a true death for plants.
Their danger is in the multiplicity and gluttony. Each female lays up to 300 eggs. And after 20-40 days, the larvae turn into adult insects and also begin to breed.
Such a horde literally dries plants. But how to deal with it?
Whitefly is the inevitable companion of the vegetable grower. Overwintering under soil lumps and in natural shelters, insects begin to lay eggs, as soon as warm weather sets in. In apartments, on indoor plants, and in heated greenhouses, whiteflies are active and successfully breed all year round.
Pests, both adults and larvae, have excellent appetite and can feed on the juice of almost any plant, including weed. So destroy them half-
by depriving the feed base, it is impossible. It has been noticed that the most “favorite dishes” of whiteflies are cucumbers and tomatoes, and among indoor flowers - fuchsias, begonias, pelargonium (geranium), passionflower, balsamine and lanthanum.
Whitefly does the most harm where high temperature is combined with high humidity (that is, in greenhouses and greenhouses), where there is no good ventilation, and plants are densely populated.
FIRST SYMPTOMS of trouble - single, small, white-flake-like insects taking off from disturbed plants. Small yellow spots may appear on the leaves, at the places where the whitefly is fed. You can search for larvae and eggs through a magnifying glass, because they are very small. The pest larvae are flat, pale green, and the eggs are greenish and dark gray pellets, balls, laid in the form of a ring.
SEEING THE FIRST Pests, you can not hesitate - whitefly multiplies very quickly. The danger to the plant is even insect secretion, the so-called honey dew, or pad. This sweet substance is very attractive for soot fungus. Although it does not harm plants directly (does not damage the tissue), it prevents photosynthesis, further inhibiting planting. In addition, whitefly is one of the most active carriers of viral diseases of plants.
WHILE STILL HIGH EFFICIENCY are shown by the preparations of the neonicotinoid group (DV thiamethoxam, imidacloprid, acetamipride and clotianidin). But they must be used according to the instructions.
The pest does not develop resistance to biological products containing spores and mycelium of the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana and Pinicillium camamberti spores. But the effectiveness of these drugs depends on temperature and humidity.
In industrial greenhouses, predatory insects are used in the fight against whitefly - in particular, the bug of macrolofus, as well as the wasp parasite, enkarzia. Females of these wasps lay eggs in the body of whitefly larvae, and they soon die. The effectiveness of the latter method is very high, however, it is quite difficult to acquire encarsia.
To reduce the number of whiteflies, yellow glue traps are used. You can make them yourself - from pieces of plywood or hardboard painted in yellow. They are lubricated with a long non-drying glue. The effectiveness of such traps will be greater if the insects are periodically scared and regularly replaced (as they are filled with whiteflies and other insects).
HOW DO OUR READERS FIGHT WITH THE WHEATWATER?
O. Bakuleva from the Kaluga region applied found on the Internet and (by description) slaughter for whitefly infusion of tobacco and soap. For its preparation, she filled 400 g of tobacco dust with 1 bucket of water and insisted for 2 days. Then I squeezed it out, added another 1 bucket of liquid, and 40 g of green soap in each (you can use the laundry soap by rubbing it on a grater). Alas, the time taken to prepare the preparation was lost for the plants - the whitefly managed to do much harm to them. So in advanced cases it is better to use faster tools.
But G. Shmelenko from the Oryol region, desperate to get rid of the whitefly, put it overnight in a greenhouse (3 × 6 m) 3 mosquito coils. And in the morning ... discovered a mountain of corpses. She performed three treatments, as "aromatherapy" did not act on larvae and eggs. We managed to reduce the number of pests. A week after the last treatment, she took the crop.
And in the fall, having removed all the plant debris from the greenhouse and digging the soil, she treated the room with a sulfur block.
The safety of this method of controlling whiteflies has not been tested. However, it is known that the active substance of some anti-mosquito coils has a waiting period of not 7, but 20-30 days.
And N. Kovalev from the Perm Territory tried use rapeseed oil from whiteflies - 3 tbsp. tablespoons in 5 liters of water. It is believed that an oily film sticks together the wings of insects and leads to their death. It was not possible to completely destroy the pests in this way, but there were clearly fewer of them.
FIGHTING THE WHITEFLY - ADVICE AND FEEDBACK
AGERATUM - THUNDER WHITEFLY
Ageratum blooms from May until the first frost, and when cut, it retains its original beauty for a long time. But no less important argument in favor of “settling” among your plants an “ageless” (as its name is translated) flower is the unique ability to destroy the whitefly, which is dangerous for many cultures.
WHAT'S THE SECRET
Attracted by the aroma of ageratum, the pest lays its eggs on the plant, and the larvae that appear begin to feed on its juice, which is a real poison for them. Even if a few resistant larvae do not die, the fecundity of future adults will drop sharply. And in subsequent generations, such a “diet” will lead to the complete sterilization of the whitefly. Thus, planting a plant in a greenhouse, loggia, balcony, flower bed, you can do without chemical treatments from the pest. Well, there is no need to talk about the beauty of this fluffy flower.
STUDIES by scientists have shown that ageratum bushes planted on an area of 1,2 sq.m are able to clear a greenhouse of 120 sq.m from an annoying insect!
