How to restore an old cart with your own hands - PART 1 (+ CARTOON drawings)
WOODEN CAR REPAIR - CLEARING DETAILS
SOME KNOWLEDGE TO BRING ME TO THE FRAME OF AN OLD EQUESTRIAN CAR AND I ASKED TO RESTORE IT, SO AS THE CARRIAGE IT IS NECESSARY IN THE HOUSEHOLD. SEEING THE BROWNED CONSTRUCTION, I UNDERSTANDED - MOST NODES NEED TO MANUFACTURE AGAIN. WITH A PLEASURE I AGREED TO HELP AND TAKE PLACE FOR WORK.
Prepared drawings of the entire structure (see drawings) and its individual units (Fig. 2). I ordered birch boards with a section of 150 × 50 mm at the sawmill. Stacked them in a stack for drying for the whole winter. In the forest, he prepared birch poles with a diameter of at least 80 mm and a length of 3-3,5 m. In total, 15 pieces were required. He brought them home, sanded and folded to dry under a canopy.
According to the drawing, he made two pairs of wooden wheels - front d 600 mm and rear d 750 mm. Each edged with a metal strip. He made the front axle out of a metal rod, and welded new threaded ends and thrust rings to the rear (left from the old wagon), assembled the front and rear axles.
Sawed the front and back beds from a birch board 50 × 150 mm, according to the sketch (Fig. 2) He knocked paired parts together on large steel nails, smearing with pre-drilled holes with PVA glue. Marked and drilled with a pen drill d 30 mm, 6 holes for longitudinal poles in the upper part of each garden bed.
I installed a lower slewing disk on the backing board. Marked and drilled holes d 11 mm for vertical mounting studs and forged stop bolts.
Tightened the nuts tightly and secured to the axis on four step-ladders through the earrings (photo 1). Attached to the front bed is the upper pivoting disk and the upper laid on steel plate with ears under the extreme poles. I drilled all the necessary holes in place.
On the axis of symmetry in the garden bed and base board, I drilled a bore hole d 15 mm for subsequent swivel connection with a bolt M 14 × 460 mm.
He fastened the back bed to the axis on short step-ladders through ear-brackets. I fastened the upper laid-on steel strip with ears under the extreme poles by two bolts. Then he additionally pulled to the axis with long ladders and a central through bolt M 10 × 390 mm. Wheel assemblies are ready (photo 2)
From the two most straight and thick poles according to the drawing, he made shafts with a length of 2520 mm. Of the rest, I cut the parts for the cart - 6 internal length 2420 mm d 45 mm and two extreme lengths 2520 mm d 55 mm.
He inserted all the finished poles into the corresponding holes in the beds and pressed them to a tight installation with a rubber mallet. Set steel forged rods from the beds to the poles (photo Z).

CAR DRAWINGS
It's time to make a box with a seat for holiday trips. Prepared a drawing (see. Fig.) And set to work.
From a birch bar with a section of 50 × 70 mm, a subframe assembled into a spike groove (photo 1). I screwed two curved support arcs from steel strips with a section of 40 × 8 mm to it. For irradiation and a seat of six (rub each) of birch parts sawn on a band saw, he folded oval backs and secured them to a stretcher using wooden racks d 25 mm (photo 2). He reinforced the seat arc with a tin strip, fixing it with bolts. Immediately put a rim of steel bar d 12 mm above the back (photo 3)
He also strengthened the arc of the irradiation (photo 4). He reinforced the finished seat backs and the irradiation for rigidity with tin strips, fixing them crosswise (see photo З, 4). At the same time, I installed an irradiation board on the bolts to the supporting frame with two handles from a steel bar.
He knocked down a seat out of two boards and set it on a stretcher on solid legs made of timber (photo 5). He pulled the metal arcs in front of the seat and the irradiation for reliability by a metal plate (photo 6)
The finished “carriage” (photo 7) was mounted on a cart, leveled by a margin on the rear axle and screwed it onto four M 10 × 110 mm bolts with nuts to the extreme longitudinal poles. He painted the entire structure with protective impregnation for wood (photo 8)
Set the left and right pedal for ascent and descent from the walker. On two brackets from a steel strip, a board rest for the coachman was fixed (photo 9)
Ready "Siberian walker" showed a friend, his joy knew no bounds. After all, now he has a real carriage from the past, which turns into a working cart (just unscrew the four mounting bolts).
