5 topical questions about homemade compost
COMPOST OWN HANDS - 5 QUESTIONS
Want to save on expensive fertilizers?
Lay the compost. This will not only allow you to get excellent organo-mineral nutrition for the next season, but also solve the problem of waste.
Where to place the compost pit?
—The place where the compost will ripen should be far enough from the house, including from the residential buildings of neighbors. It is important that it is protected from direct sunlight and wind.
If you notice that during rain the water collects near the compost and does not dry out for a long time, be sure to dig around the groove for drainage.
If you have to place the compost box on a hill, where it will dry out, cover it with a spanbond. This will retain moisture and hide from the sun, while at the same time, the material will pass the oxygen necessary for compost.
How to organize a place for composting?
—In the place where you are going to lay the compost, dig a foundation pit 15 cm deep and with an area equal to the desired heap (for example, 1 × 5 m). Put drainage in the recess: if clay soil - sand (1 cm), sand - clay (5 cm).
The next layer will be responsible for breathability. Use large branches and wood trimmings for this. Then alternate layers of organics 25 cm high and garden soil (5-7 cm).
Remember that the height of the compost in the box or heap should be no more than 1 m. Use hay, straw or chopped grass as the top layer.
What can be put in compost?
- Plant waste from the garden
- Shredded grass
- Weeds
- Shredded pruning of bushes and trees
- Eggshell, peeling fruits and vegetables, bread
- Coffee grounds, tea leaves
- Straw, manure, sawdust
- Fallen leaves
What can not be put in compost?
- Bones, spoiled meat, leftovers from fatty foods
- Weeds with seeds
- Tops of tomatoes and potatoes affected by late blight
- Plastic foil
How to accelerate the compost maturation?
- Laid down in May (without accelerators), the compost will be ready by early next spring. If you want to make home fertilizer already for the autumn digging, spill as each layer of organics is filled with a bucket of urea solution (1 tablespoon per 10 liters of water). You can use Baikal-EM or Radiance (according to the instructions).

HOW TO ACCELERATE THE MATURE OF COMPOST
The rapid maturation of the compost is facilitated by its monthly shoveling. It is necessary to ensure that the mass is moist at all times. It is better to water the compost with warm water with a mullein, consuming 30-40 liters of solution.

Can kitchen waste be composted in winter?
Or is it better not to disturb the bunch?
#
- The compost heap can also be refilled in winter. Remove the frozen top and compost your kitchen waste. Sprinkle them constantly with peat crumb, sawdust, straw chopping, or prepared earth. It is better not to touch the middle and lower parts of the heap: cold air that gets there will slow down microbiological processes. Please note that it is undesirable to add greasy waste, bones and animal proteins to compost.

Properly prepared compost improves soil fertility and improves its structure. And the “wrong” one only clogs the plot with weed seeds. A place under the compost pit is usually allotted in a secluded corner of the garden. Or install special boxes. Some gardeners lay out the compostar’s walls of brick with a partial burial in the ground and make two or three compartments.
Compost can consist of peat, manure, sawdust, chopped branches, leaves, and other organic waste. Excellent fertilizer is obtained from the shot turf, which is folded grass down. All contents must be interbedded with wood ash, slaked lime. I also like to use crushed bones - meal, with which compost is “tastier” to plants.
Even if there is no pit, you can put everything in a heap. During the summer, it is watered several times and shovel. Instead of water, it is good to use slurry. The best days for arranging and filling the compost are May 20-22.
