Conifer hedge: how to plant and how to care for it in winter

HOW TO CARE FOR A LIVING FENCE FROM CONIFEROUS PLANTS?
Summer residents increasingly decorate their personal plots with hedges of conifers. These plants look good both in winter and in summer, lend themselves perfectly to shaping and pruning. But after winter they can lose their decorative effect.
To prevent this from happening, let's talk about proper care for them in the cold season.
Under the weight of the snow caps, the branches break. Therefore, columnar and spherical shrubs of junipers tie with twine. If necessary, place supports under the branches of other species. After snowfalls, do not forget to sweep snow off the plants with a broom.
If the branch is broken, wait for the first thaw or frost not lower than -5 degrees, and remove it with a sharp secateurs without leaving a hemp. Be sure to cover the cut with garden varnish or oil-white paint.
The roots of conifers are sensitive in winter to temperature extremes. To solve the problem will help mulching the soil under plants with organic matter - needles, pine bark, sawdust, spruce branches, hay.
In recent years, on thaw days, it sometimes rains ice.
And when the frost returns again, moisture on the branches, freezing, fetters them in an ice "shell". It will not work to shelter the hedge from the rain: this is not a single plant on which you can throw a spanbond. I can advise the following: after precipitation with the same broom, sweep a drop of water from the shoots.
Recently planted conifers under direct bright rays of the sun, which are reflected from the white snow infusion, literally "burn". As a result, the needles turn yellow, the bark may even peel off.
In this case, it is advisable to shade the plants for the first couple of years in the second half of winter by constructing shields from improvised materials. If the bark has peeled off, carefully peel it off, and cover the affected surface with a garden var.

NUANCES OF PLANTING A CONIFEROUS FENCE
To plant a hedge, a trench is dug, not holes. If the soil on the site is not depleted, the upper (more fertile) layer is folded on one side, the lower one on the other. The width of the ditch for a single-row fence is 40-50 cm, for a double-row fence - 70-90 cm, depth - 50-60 cm.
If groundwater lies close, the depth is increased by 15 cm by placing drainage (gravel, etc.) in this space. Mix the removed top layer of soil with peat, sand and fertilizers, and then pour it into a trench 10 cm above the soil level (the soil will shrink).
Mark the planting sites so that the row is even. Plants are buried at the same level at which they grew in the pot. Compact the soil well and water abundantly. You can add a growth stimulator to the water for irrigation. After this, the lopsided specimens are leveled and the soil where it has subsided is added.
