HOW I HAVE ASSEMBLED A CNC LASER BURNER WITH OWN HANDS AND WHAT CAN I DO
I didn’t have a problem with the visual arts since childhood: I couldn’t draw except for the cells in the notebook. But at the same time, I have always been interested in the methods by which people express their artistic abilities.
And then one day I saw a video on youtube about a CNC machine. Burnout diode laser, assembled from two dvd drives. After reviewing it, I, as an electronics engineer, wanted to repeat this design. I climbed through specialized forums. studied the options for controlling this equipment and as a result
HAS ASSEMBLED MY FIRST LASER BURNER LITERALLY FROM WHAT WAS UNDER HANDS.
It turned out to be a kind of small monster with a working field of 3 x XNUMX cm, which was controlled by an Arduino programmable microcontroller with Grbl Controller software.
Imagine my joy when, after several months of work, I held in my hands the drawing he had made! I still keep this cardboard as a keepsake. After the idea with a small machine turned out, the thought immediately arose: why not make the machine bigger in order to burn out more serious things?
This time, I took the laser burner "Alternative Light" by Nikolai Iosifovich Filenko, one of the pioneers of home CNC construction, as a model for my future machine. After reading his articles, I assembled my first large belt-driven machine on rollers rolling on an aluminum profile. The device was also controlled using the Arduino microcontroller.
Along the way, with the knowledge of the intricacies of machine tool construction, I had the need to learn how to work with photographs, to master working with various editors: the final quality of the product strongly depends on photo processing.
In total, it took me almost a year not to be ashamed to show the result to someone else. A couple of times there were even moments when I wanted to give up everything, because apart from electronics I had to delve into the intricacies of mechanics and learn to understand belts, rollers, pulleys, etc. But as they say, if you suffer for a long time, something will work out. Gradually, I began to donate portraits burned on plywood to my family and friends. Then the first orders began to appear, and things got better.
Now I have a small workshop on my balcony with two machines with a hood, an uninterruptible power supply system and an online camera.
In this regard, I had to learn how to properly harvest such material: working with wood, sawing it, drying it, grinding it. Getting a cut, suitable for burning, with intact bark is a whole science! He also began to understand the types of wood. For example, needles have a pronounced structure, and if you choose the right burning mode, you can get very interesting striped portraits. But the maple turned out to be an extremely hard and stubborn tree. But from its small cuts, carefully dried, excellent trinkets are obtained, which practically do not demolish!
Everyone loves the puzzles and portrait cubes I made. Even myself, having made such an order, it happens that I will kill more than one hour, putting together a puzzle: very exciting!
Over the course of several years, I have repeatedly modified the first machine: removed the rollers (now it rolls on rail guides), changed the controller Arduino on MicroNC2, which is made by our inventor Sergei Efremov.
The second large machine was made already taking into account the experience gained, so with its launch everything was easier and faster.
After working on the machine tools became understandable and familiar to me, I began to experiment with materials, for example, I really liked the portraits on an unrooted board: they look more unusual and original on it than on plywood. The cuts of the tree also produce wonderful portraits and landscapes. In addition, I mastered burning on glass, which is covered with paint, even on chocolate and bananas!
One of the additional advantages of my hobby is the constant meeting with interesting creative people. For example, in his city he met a master leatherworker. And now many of his works are passing through my hands: leather turned out to be an excellent material for burning.
Very quickly we found a common language and new customers with a girl who knits toys. The crochet frames turned out to be a very nice frame for my portraits. And a familiar artist can add colors to my shades of gray - it turns out very unusual!
Now we are preparing a joint project with a girl who makes painted gingerbread. We want to make gift sets for Mother's Day and New Year's with a cutting board decorated by me and its beautiful and tasty products.
Communication with so many creative people and working with materials that are new to oneself are very inspiring. This is how the desire came to try hand-made woodwork. I started to cut spoons - it worked! They even began to order.
Now I bought myself a Pegas jigsaw, I am mastering the work of Tc him. It also opens up a lot of room for imagination. It turns out that through electronics I came to work with natural wood, and I really like it. In addition, it is quite flattering to realize that the decision to try to assemble the machine from the trash brought the following results: in five years, the portraits I made have spread not only to cities in Russia, but also to other parts of the world.
