Shelter for the winter: do no harm!
Let's analyze 7 dangerous mistakes of summer residents when sheltering, which often cost plants life.
1. Used contaminated material
The fact that spruce branches for shelter is one of the best materials is a fact. It retains snow and at the same time allows air to pass through, so the plants do not rot. However, sometimes coniferous plants can be carriers of diseases (rust, various types of rot) and a breeding ground for pests (bark beetles, sawflies). Therefore, before using, make sure that the coniferous branches are healthy. The same applies to fallen leaves, which must be dry.
2. We took out the old burlap from the barn
Decided to cover the plants with old bags of potatoes, beets, carrots? Then keep in mind that if they were not treated for a fungal infection (for example, with a pink solution of potassium permanganate, Fitosporin, Bordeaux liquid or a solution of copper sulfate - 100 g per 10 liters of water), pathogens could remain on them. But even a new burlap has a drawback: it instantly absorbs moisture, at sub-zero temperatures it becomes covered with a crust of ice, and when it gets warmer it can become moldy. If you cover with burlap, make sure that there is no direct contact of the fabric with the shoots.
3. Hurry up with insulation
Do not rush to shelter if the forecast promises a severe cold snap, followed by a sharp warming soon. This threatens with decay of the kidneys, which is dangerous for plants no less than their freezing.
Exit? To protect plants from low temperatures for a short period, use temporary structures - for example, metal arcs, on which, if necessary, several layers of spunbond can be thrown.
4. Ignored Sanitary Pruning
Timely removal of excess, dry, diseased shoots and branches in September-October helps plants prepare for winter and accumulate enough strength for growth, flowering and fruiting in the next season. And it will become much easier to cover more compact plants after pruning.

5. We used only film to cover plants
By itself, polyethylene is not suitable for sheltering plants for the winter. It will not help protect plantings from severe frosts. In addition, condensation forms on its surface from the inside, and excess moisture contributes to the development and spread of infections, sometimes leading to aging of the kidneys.
It is acceptable to use a film for additional protection of the main shelter, for example, throw it over sawdust or leaves.
6. Did not install the frame
Summer residents often cover plants for the winter with spunbond or agrofiber, laying it out right on the plantings. In this case, there is a high risk of damage to branches, shoots (especially during heavy snowfalls). In addition, a warm air layer does not form between the soil surface and the canvas. It is much more efficient to cover frame structures with non-woven fabric.
7. We used horse peat
Dry peat is useful for hilling plants, mulching tree trunks. But not every type of peat is suitable for this. For example, any fresh peat is toxic and will need to be ventilated before use. To do this, the substrate is kept in heaps, which are periodically shoveled (for lowland peat it will take only 3-4 days, but for horseback it will take 2-3 months).
In addition, different types of peat have different acidity: in lowland it is neutral or slightly acidic (pH - 5,5-6,5), in highland it is acidic (pH - up to 5). This means that using high peat jj for hilling plants that prefer alkaline soil, you can harm them. Such peat will be an excellent mulch for lovers of acidic soils - heather, rhododendron. In other cases, use low-lying peat.
